The purchase of our ranch style home on a small plot of 4.5 acres began with a horrible accident I had at Christmas 2010. When you fall down an entire flight of stairs with your 17 month old in your arms, breaking multiple bones in a desperate attempt to protect your baby girl (she didn’t even get a scratch), you long to have your house hold on one level. 3 years later we moved into our home in a small town in the upstate of South Carolina and after 8 months of being in our new home we had our first flock of 8 tiny little chicks.
Now I’m originally from Southern California and the most I knew about raising chickens was from what I saw on the tv show “Little House on the Prairie” which was filmed at Big Sky ranch in my home town of Simi Valley. My husband on the other hand grew up raising chickens and pigs in his home town of Quitman , MS. How we met is another blog for another day! LOL
Our first few years, we learned a lot. Like how to protect them from the elements and predators. What they can eat and not eat. The best way to clean the coup or not. And most important, how to integrate new hens to an existing flock. Just an fyi, that can literally be a blood bath!!! But overall I learned to love these little creatures. They make me smile all the time and they have the funniest little quirks.
By 2018 we decided to start selling our eggs, 3 dozen a day was more than even our athletic son could eat in a day. We slowly built a following on Facebook and Instagram and have enjoyed meeting the people of our community through selling our Farm Fresh Eggs.
Blogging is new for me so it may take a few times to into a groove. I will also share a few recipes we have come to love using our fresh eggs and duck eggs. Thank you to our now 750 followers. We appreciate the love!
